The Best Water to Use in a Hydrogen Water Bottle
Use mineral water or another drinking water, anywhere from warm to cold. Do not use distilled water or tap water, and put nothing in the bottle except water. Those are the rules for the HDRO Bottle 4.0. Below is each rule and the reason for it.
Mineral water or bottled drinking water: yes
This is what the HDRO Bottle 4.0 is made for. Any water sold for drinking works, and mineral water is our first recommendation.
Tap water: no
Tap water is treated with chlorine or chloramine in most places, and its mineral content changes from town to town and from month to month. Electrolysis can turn the chloride in tap water into chlorine gas, and hard water leaves mineral build-up on the plates. Bottled drinking water removes the guesswork.
Distilled water: no
Distilled water has had almost everything dissolved in it removed. The HDRO instructions say not to use it, so use mineral water or another drinking water instead.
Only water, nothing else
No juice, tea, coffee, milk, sports drinks or powders. The electrodes and membrane are made to work in water. Anything else can coat or damage them. If you want a flavour, make the hydrogen water first, pour it into a glass, and add the flavour there.
Temperature: warm to cold, never scalding
Warm to cold water is fine. Do not pour scalding hot water into the bottle, as it may damage it.
Cold water has a second advantage. Gases dissolve better in cold water than in warm water, which is also why a cold soda keeps its fizz longer than a warm one.
Drink it soon after the cycle
Hydrogen is the smallest molecule there is, and dissolved hydrogen slowly escapes from water once it is made. Keep the lid closed after the cycle and drink the water soon, rather than making a bottle in the morning to drink at night.
Keep the plates clean
Whatever water you use, clean the plates twice a month. Pour white vinegar onto the titanium plates in the centre of the base until they are fully covered, leave it for 30 minutes, then rinse the plates under running water. Do not submerge the base, put it in the dishwasher or scrub it with a brush.
